The world-famous resort of St. Moritz hardly needs introduction. Its elevation (1856 m, 6088 ft) and location in the spectacular upper Inn Valley (Engadin) region of Switzerland's easternmost Canton, Graubünden (or Grisons) make it a year-round favorite. You can read all about it at its website.
St. Moritz, which proudly advertises itself as the greatest snow-sports region of Switzerland, offers a wide variety of recreational activities. In addition to down-hill skiing, there is excellent cross-country skiing, ski touring, snow shoeing, sleigh riding, leisurely walking on the miles of prepared paths and frozen lakes.
We plan to have Tuesday afternoon free. Many activities are available for this time. One attractive option is to take the Bernina Express over the Bernina Pass (2330 m, 7642 ft) and down to Tirano, Italy, which, at only 500 m (1640 ft) elevation, has much milder weather than St. Moritz. This is a UNESCO World Heritage route. From their blurb: "The bridges, stations, and tunnels are designed to be in harmony with the striking topography. The route was designed to highlight the spectacular mountainscapes, and it's all visible from the train's panoramic-view windows." The trip is about 2-3 h each way. For details: Rhaetian Railway
